“The way I see it there’s two types of people, those who spend their lives trying to build a future and those who spend their lives trying to rebuild the past.”

Turns out, Max Payne is a bit of both! In a surprise announcement today, Remedy Games revealed they are in the early concept stages of fully remaking both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne in partnership with Rockstar Games.

The noir-style shooters follow the story of the titular NYPD detective as he descends into grief following the loss of his wife and daughter. Renowned for their storytelling and gunplay, the games are an important staple of both Remedy and Rockstar’s catalogues.

Rockstar acquired the IP rights to the franchise and published Max Payne 2 on behalf of Remedy in the early 2000s, before later going on to develop the third and final entry in the series themselves back in 2012. Ten years later, Remedy have successfully approached Rockstar with a request to return to Max Payne’s origins, an offer I’m sure they gladly accepted!

The remakes will be developed on Remedy’s own Northlight Engine, previously used for Quantum Break, Control, and the upcoming Alan Wake sequel. Development, marketing, and publishing will be entirely financed by Rockstar Games to ensure a “typical Remedy AAA-game production”.

The development agreement was only signed today, according to the press release, so it could be a few more years yet before we see anything else from the project, but it’s definitely caught our interest here on GTANet and in the wider Rockstar Games community. Both games will be remade into a single release package for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Rockstar Games have announced today in a Newswire post that GTA Online services, along with stat tracking are shutting down starting 16th December 2021. They also added that this will also apply for some other games on these legacy platforms such as Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire (the original edition, not L.A. Noire VR).

Maintaining online services for such old platforms can be a security and development nightmare in many cases, so this move shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. Personally speaking from experience of trying to maintain legacy (in this case Web) systems in the past, it’s much more of a pain than it’s worth, not to mention most GTA Online players are now using the PS4, Xbox One, PC and current-gen platforms to play GTA Online on.

These legacy systems many times cannot be updated to the latest versions of whatever software is used to maintain them, which can pose serious security risks, along with it being a waste of development time when new games are in the horizon and the manufacturers themselves don’t support the consoles anymore.

In the same post, Rockstar has reaffirmed their Fall target release date for GTA V Expanded & Enhanced, for which we hope to have news about very very soon šŸ˜‰

Two weeks ago, Max Payne & Rockstar Games fansite webmasters were flown in from around the world for a weekend of Max Payne 3 action. Held in Rockstar’s backyard of south-central Manhattan, this was the largest fansite event that the R* team has ever hosted.

We’re extremely grateful for the opportunity to check out the game and meet other fansite webmasters. (Thanks, Rockstar!) We’re psyched for the release of Max Payne 3.

We’ve posted a rundown of our impressions on our new sister site, PayneForums.com. It covers our experiences during the event, and our impressions of the game – specifically system performance, gameplay, Max’s abilities, game visuals, multiplayer, and our hopes for the future of the game (including DLC and online community).

In a new interview with IGN focused on Max Payne 3, Dan Houser has revealed that GTA V’s multiplayer will support “Crews” that are to be introduced with Max Payne 3 and will be used in future Rockstar titles. Crews are essentially clan-like groups where you are rewarded for playing with other members of your crew and completing objectives together. You will also be matched with other people in your crew during matchmaking.

“The beauty of this system is that crews persist over time and across future games. Multiplayer is an ever-more important part of all our games moving forward. And by creating crews through Social Club, the crews that you create in Max Payne 3 will be ready and available for you to play in Grand Theft Auto V from day one. It’s all part of our larger approach to make multiplayer deeper and richer than what’s currently available, much more easily accessible to the newcomer and rewarding for the hardcore.”

The interview focuses on how crews will be used in Max Payne 3, but it gives an indication for how GTA V’s multiplayer may be affected by them. Read the full interview on IGN to get a better understanding of their purpose.
