Foreword from GTANet
Ideas keep the wheels of our community turning, and there’s no place like a forum for word-based content to thrive. Back in the day, amongst the multitude of wishlist threads, a home emerged for creative writers armed with a desire for what you might define as fanfiction, not for the fluff of romance and shipping, but to build the foundations of their own video games. It’s ebbed and flowed in activity over the years; new generations bring fresh writers and ideas, but excitement for the next Grand Theft Auto can take a lot of eyes away from this somewhat quieter area of the forums as well. This is where wise_man comes in; a writer himself and deeply involved in our concept creator community, he has put together some wise words of his own to highlight popular concepts with hope to inspire both new readers and new creators to join in, and upon asking us for a platform to showcase them, we of course obliged. Enjoy.

There is a plethora of community-driven fan-made content one can find while surfing GTAForums, and this includes fans imagining their own GTA games. In the GTA Series subforum, you can find this kind of content, known as “concepts threads”.

Supported by a small, but longstanding and creative community of self-proclaimed concept writers, concept threads are more than just narrative fanfiction. They are a complete package that also includes fan-created world-building with extensive characters, cool maps and artworks, gameplay ideas, and soundtracks, to make you fully immersed into thinking these could be real games.

Here I’ve compiled a small list of forum-award-winning GTA fanfiction from GTAForums that you can read while waiting for GTA VI. Writers love feedback, so if you check them out, please show some love! You can also join us in the Concept Creators’ Lounge to share ideas with fellow writers or seek advice if you’d like to get started on your own concept. Beyond this list, you can check out more concepts for yourself in the GTA Series subforum by keeping an eye out for any topics highlighted with a red or grey tag. There’s also a more generalized literature and poetry subforum called Writers’ Discussion you can visit any time.

THIRD RAIL
by Slimeball Supreme & Cebra
Third Rail
has won the 2021 GTANet Award in Best Concept category, and it’s not without reason. This collaboration between writers duo Slimeball Supreme and Cebra is perfect for hardcore GTA IV fans and mafia enthusiasts. Set in Liberty City in the 80’s, Third Rail goes deep into the past of the McReary and the five families as you follow the life of a younger Derrick McReary and his two revolutionary buddies Bucky Sligo and Aiden O’Malley. The story is extremely dense with mob drama, power plays and violent politics all carefully based on that of real life.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: CHASING THE DRAGON
by kobeni
Here’s a perfect concept for more audiophile fans. Chasing The Dragon has the high-speed, yet laid-back SoCal vibe with the tasteful presentation and a beautifully illustrated fan-made map that expands GTA V’s Los Santos universe with San Diego, Tijuana, and more. The real star, however, is the soundtrack. It’s more than playlists. From jazz funk to city pop, each station has a swell logo, unique host, and interaction that screams mid-’90s California all the way, inside-and-out.

COSA NOSTRA // BADFELLAS
by E Revere, Francesco Bonomo, and Doktorpolice
Looking for classic, memorable 3D Era concepts instead? Then look for these two concepts, which are imagined as a prequel of GTA III and Liberty City Stories. Cosa Nostra centers around a young and brash Salvatore Leone in 1959, while Badfellas continues Salvatore’s history with the mob in mid-80’s. These concepts are really easy to follow along with its familiar cast of characters, the more gritty dialogue and the simplicity of the missions and story.

GRAND THEFT AUTO IV: THE RUSSIAN ROULETTE
by Jeansowaty
This concept explores an opposite perspective of GTA IV’s story. The Russian Roulette is about the Russian Mafia’s rise to prominence, with an original protagonist named Gennadi Zhukov who accompanies Dimitri Rascalov’s journey that parallels Niko’s. It has a great mix of convincing fanmade character models, gameplay features, mission screenshots, and in-game contents that makes it feel like a lost vanilla DLC.

LIGHT & SHADOW
by wise_man
Light & Shadow
twists the traditional GTA formula with the slimy art of confidence tricks. This modern-day Vice City concept follows a new trio of con artists, each with a unique conning style associated with them, in a gameplay with long cons, trickery, and undercover conspiracies to undermine its villains. The mission writing also lets you think that you’re in charge, with a penchant for emphasizing control keys in-between the lines.
🔖 Read Light & Shadow Here

GRAND THEFT AUTO: LIBERTY CITY 1978
by Akaviri
Liberty City 1978
is another period piece concept imagined as a prequel for GTA IV. As a tribute to 70’s cinemas, the concept sets in a time of total corruption, inner turmoil and racial prejudices of 1978. There are a lot of things that make the concept feel like a unique experience, laid out like an official game manual. Akaviri has many brilliant gameplay ideas, including more-intensifying heists, crew management, and various role-playing aspects.

In an unprecedented move within the GTA modding scene, Rockstar Games yesterday announced that the team behind FiveM and RedM multiplayer on PC has officially joined the company.

Cfx.re, or CitizenFX Collective, is a small team behind the development of both FiveM and RedM clients, a PC multiplayer mod that connects to Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to essentially provide a virtual playground with online play. Creators can host their own servers, or buy external hosting, via the frameworks, paving the way for an endless amount of custom content such as game modes, stories, missions, and most-notably, roleplaying.

Growth has steadily increased since the first iterations of the mod released in 2014, with GTA RP (roleplay) exploding on live-streaming services and well-known content creators still leading GTAV views on Twitch today; there are frequently over 200k players online at any given time. One of the most notable servers, NoPixel, retains a massive community with a dedicated development team of their own.

None of this would be possible without FiveM and RedM, and as of yesterday, it’s all officially part of Rockstar Games, painting a bright future for community-driven play and user-generated content.

Day-to-day operations will not change right now and support will continue to be lead by Cfx.re, according to the team and Rockstar Support, but with Rockstar’s backing, wider improvements to the platform can easily continue, and we’re sure there are lots of plans for months ahead from this incredible collaboration.

Today we are extremely excited to announce that Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM and RedM projects – is now officially a part of Rockstar Games!
This is a huge step forward in the growth of our community, and an opportunity for us to work with Rockstar Games to advance the FiveM platform and the creative community surrounding it.
While our day-to-day operations won’t have any noticeable changes, with Rockstar’s support, we are going to continue to improve our platform and we are truly excited for what this means for our users, community, and creators!
And for those curious about what else Rockstar is working on, please understand that our partnership with Rockstar Games is focused on our FiveM and RedM platforms. So please, do not ask us about the next GTA!
Thank you all for your support. We can’t wait to see what the future brings!

The Cfx.re team

If you’re on PC, check out FiveM and RedM for yourself! There’s lots of information on how to start within their dedicated Cfx.re Forum, and it’s also where you can keep an eye out for announcements and get support. We’ve also opened up our own section on GTAForums to spread awareness and encourage discussion within our own community.

Following on from a kerfuffle of rumors over the past several weeks, Rockstar Games have laid speculations to rest and revealed Red Dead Redemption will arrive on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles digitally on August 17 and physically on October 13.

The port, described as a new conversion, will bring the 2010 masterpiece to the two consoles with PlayStation 5 owners also guaranteed access via PS4 backwards compatibility. The flesh-eating side-story Undead Nightmare hasn’t been forgotten, of course, and arrives packaged together with the main game.

The conversion has been developed by Double Eleven Studios, a team based in the north of England that was founded by former Rockstar Leeds employees in 2009. D11 is most known for developing ports of games such as Goat Simulator, Rust, and Minecraft Dungeons, as well as leading content for Fallout 76. The studio has acknowledged the release is “not quite a remaster, not quite a port”, but that a lot of love has been put into development to bring these games to new consoles for the first time.

Following launch, this will bring Red Dead Redemption in line for all console players, as Xbox Series X/S already has access to a 4K capable version via the Xbox Backwards Compatibility program – this obviously explains why Xbox is not part of the release announcement, in case you were wondering! This means PS4 Pro and PS5 will likely play up to 4K resolution much like Xbox BC, with the PS4 original and Switch versions at 1080p. FPS is not yet confirmed, but Xbox BC runs at 30FPS, meaning it’s likely the same for this new conversion as well.

Unfortunately, PC continues to be excluded from the line-up, rallying bitter disappointment amongst fans. The game has long evaded the platform, and it was thought with the recent rumors that it may at last arrive on PC, but alas, it was not meant to be and it’s not particularly clear why. Unconfirmed but regularly discussed, the game is thought to have experienced complicated development back in the day, and the different architecture of the 7th generation era of consoles is speculated to contribute to the lack of PC attention from the get-go. Some fans still hold hope for a native version to be announced in the future however, while others resort to emulation to fulfil the experience.

Both PlayStation and Switch players can expect to pay $49.99, digital or physical, which has been a bone of contention amongst the community since the reveal. The PlayStation store also confirms that the game is singleplayer-only, omitting the original multiplayer component that Xbox players have luckily kept access to – an additional sore point for some.

Regardless of your feelings on the above matters, PlayStation players have longed for access to this game on their present day consoles for quite some time, proving this release is still be a win for the veteran community and new players alike. Similarly, a game of such legendary status like this appearing on Switch can only mean good things for Nintendo’s catalogue and the play-on-the-go experience.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed trending across social media today, there’s talk of a Red Dead Redemption remaster or remake being in the works. The source? A curious new entry by South Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee.

The database reveals that title “Red Dead Redemption” was rated on 15th June 2023 – the entry is separate to all other Red Dead entries such as the original RDR, plus RDR2, leading cowpokes to board the hype train straight to Blackwater.

Now for context, this isn’t really a “leak”, South Korea’s GRAC is an official ratings board, much like ESRB in the US and PEGI in the EU; it has a reputation across gaming media for being pretty speedy with new ratings, leading to games being been spotted first on the database before they were even announced – an appearance usually indicates an announcement or release is due “soon” according to Kotaku. Most notably, a similar event happened with the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition release back in September 2021, in which a GRAC entry confirmed the existence of the project before a public announcement a month later.

The facts

  • GRAC ratings have previously confirmed other games existence before public announcements
  • This entry is separate from all other Red Dead related releases, including old bundles such as GOTY Edition
  • Classification code includes “NV”, which apparently indicates a console release as PC is usually listed separately with “NP” (according to Gematsu)
  • The classification includes the term “body damage”, which is new for this title and only appears in RDR2’s rating (according to Reddit)
  • The classification includes a reference to “dead bodies being infected with zombie viruses”, indicating the inclusion of RDR’s DLC Undead Nightmare

So what could it mean? Well above the rest, it’s speculation for the time being. Fans have been gagging on their oatcakes for a modern and accessible way to play this masterpiece for a long time, especially after re-connecting with John and the gang in RDR2. There’s been rumours of a remaster churning in the past, but it has been all quiet on the western front in that regard. So here we are now, and what better way to celebrate just how special this game still is, 13 years on, than a souped up remaster or a full blown remake using RDR2 assets? We’re all giddy at the thought.

The game was removed from Playstation Now, the Sony Cloud service, back at the end of 2022, so presently the only way to play the game is via Xbox backwards compatibility or by dusting off your OG PS3.

Realistically speaking of course, it may not be a remaster or a remake at all, so make sure you fully take that into consideration! There’s opposing opinions that it could be a Switch port given Rockstar’s relationship with Nintendo over recent years. There’s also voices suggesting it could be just a port to last and current gen consoles (without improvements) to increase exposure, though I use the word “just” lightly as this would still be a huge win for the community at large. There’s also other questions coming in all directions, such as; Why is there no platform listed like the other Red Dead titles? Why does the title not include an indicator of a re-release such as “Definitive Edition” or “Remastered”? What about a PC version of RDR? What about RDR2 4K60FPS?

The verdict

Beyond our wants and desires, nothing can be answered factually right now, so lets keep our noses clean. Essentially, this new GRAC rating is legitimate, but it simply seems to indicate that something appears to be happening in the Rockstar kitchen, but until official corroboration, we’re left to chew the fat until the cows come home and we may already be in over our heads with expectation. As always, keep your vibes positive and your thoughts in check, as you never know what’s around the corner. Our hearts are absolutely ready for anything more to come from this legendary series. Join us in our dedicated Red Dead section of GTAForums until then!

Spider “Mr Bonuses” Vice is taking a well deserved vacation to the beach right now 🦝🌴 So for this week only, yours truly is presenting the upcoming Event details in his tried and tested format!

Debuting tomorrow and up until 5th July, Independence Day celebrations kick off with freedom-themed goodies, continued San Andreas Mercenaries and hangar-related bonuses, and a brand new way to source Supplies (Convoys, anyone?)

Remember this is just a preview, and information may change. On top of that, Rockstar may reserve things for their own Newswire.

We understand that not every Event Week will be to everyone’s liking, some will certainly be more exciting than others, but anyway…

Let’s get started!

Hangar Sales Bonuses + Continued Rewards on Project Overthrow and San Andreas Mercenaries

Rooster has been so pumped for Independence Day that he’s not only sourcing your cargo now, he’s got you a meal ticket for double rewards! Take advantage of double sales this week over land or air, as well as continued bonuses on Project Overthrow and LSA Operations.

  • Until 5th July
    • 2X GTA$/RP on Hangar Sales
    • 3X GTA$/RP on Business Battles
    • 2X GTA$/RP on Air Force Zero

    • If you already own or buy the Operations Terminal and Mammoth Thruster Upgrades for the Avenger, receive the Hinterland Bomber Jacket

    • Complete all 6 Project Overthrow missions to receive the Blue & Green Camo for your Avenger
    • Complete 3 LSA Operations to receive the Conveyor livery for the Molotok

Introducing “Finders Keepers”

A brand new freemode event is hitting the State wherein successful disruption of a (moving!) target will ensure a handy re-stock of your businesses’ supplies. Taking down a travelling transport vehicle and making it back to a pre-determined business will replenish 40% of your supplies, just like that. A moving stash house, if you will.

And if you don’t own the required business already, you can deliver the goods to a location in exchange for some cash in hand while no one is looking.

Freedom Week Celebrations

I love the smell of freedom in the morning; sticky, sweet, stifling… Celebrate ‘Murica this week by logging in and claiming free USA themed liveries for your MOC, and leave citizens’ rights in the dust by roaring through Los Santos in a returning (and free) Vapid Liberator.

Additionally, participants of Business Battles can get their mitts on some celebratory swag in the process (Statue of Happiness t-shirt, Piswasser beer hat, Benedict beer hat, Patriot beer hat, and Supa Wet beer hat).

Discounts

Three levels of discounts across land and sea this week – if you’ve been waiting to use those free Avenger liveries from the last few weeks because you don’t have a hangar workshop yet, now is your chance make it a much cheaper affair!

GTA Online’s aerial-focused San Andreas Mercenaries update has officially landed on all platforms, delivering a host of gameplay and content changes; let’s check out the important bits!

Project Overthrow & LSA Operations

  • A new story with one goal in mind; embarrass Merryweather with a ladle of their our medicine
  • 6 story missions and 3 contract jobs
  • You’re team leader of the Los Santos Angels – a rough, ready, and experienced flight crew made up of Charlie Reed, Rooster McCraw, and Colonel Parnell Moss

First and foremost, before you can participate in this private military stand-off you will need to own a Mammoth Avenger and purchase an Operations Terminal for the interior, so it could set you back a few million if you’ve not dabbled before, but luckily it’s no longer locked to Facility owners – you’ll find it on Warstock and weaponry upgrades are available if you own a hangar with a workshop.

Smuggler’s Run overhaul

The aforementioned Rooster McCraw has taken up residence in your hangar, providing a new way to passively source air freight cargo (just like Lupe in your special cargo warehouse) for a fee of GTA$25k. There’s also 4 new source and 3 new sell missions that’ll allow you to conduct business over land rather than with wings; useful for unsteady pilots!

New & returning vehicles

  • Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT
  • Maibatsu MonstroCiti
  • Vapid Ratel
  • Vapid Clique Wagon
  • Declasse Walton L35
  • Mammoth Streamer216
  • F-160 Raiju
  • Previously limited Issi Rally, Panthere, Everon, & Eudora now part of the in-game catalogue

New weapon and misc. improvements

  • Tactical SMG – available to use in Project Overthrow + buy your own at the Gun Van
  • Hundreds of new clothing pieces and accessories + 3 new hairstyles (2m/1f)
  • RC Bandito time trials now rotate (and reward you) daily + there’s 5 new courses
  • Career menu for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – track your progress across all major updates, earn new rewards as you complete 1-4 Tiers of checklists that increase in difficulty – some achievements are retroactively completed while others require additional work and discipline!
  • Streamlined functions such as Buy All Body Armor button, Claim All returns to Mors Mutual Insurance, Register as a Boss menu picker, and Hold To Sprint option
  • A plethora of adjustments, bug fixes, and tweaks have also been applied across platforms as previously announced; you can check out the formal list of these on the official Rockstar Support Patch Notes

Major vehicle access changes

As you’ve undoubtedly noticed amongst the community, there’s quite a bit of upset that Rockstar have removed a number of vehicles from in-game dealership websites. This change was announced last week as a move to improve the “browsing experience” due to the ever-growing catalogue, with a suggestion that “lesser-used” vehicles would be the target. The extent of the removed content is what is raising eyebrows, however, with the list clocking in close to 200 cars and motorcycles, featuring not only what you would assume were statistically gathering dust but also several unexpected evergreen favourites. Sunsetting content is rarely a fun topic and this could perhaps be highlighted as one of the most controversial moves we’ve seen out of GTA Online, but a decision has been made, so let’s dissect things a little.

Just to clarify, this change doesn’t remove any vehicles you already own, and you’re still able to use them. Rockstar assures that the now-hidden vehicles will be brought back via events (i.e. the weekly rotations of the Lucky Wheel, Simeon’s Premium Motorsport, Luxury Autos, etc), and there’s also a high percentage that can still be stolen off the streets.

The concern amongst the community is the length of time that it could take to re-gain access to all these vehicles given the limited number of places they could re-appear. I’m personally of the impression that it may not necessarily take as long as we might imagine, as long as there is variety each week with the opportunity to expand the scope of how they are made available as well, such as new showrooms or events (as well as storage) – existing vehicles are already cycled in and out of dealership showrooms after all. Additional food for thought: “FOMO” vehicles arrived in December and are now regular fixtures as of this Update, plus the same change happened to Jobs some time ago and this did not affect players in the grand scheme of things.

The idea circulating that all of these vehicles will be reserved for paywalled access via GTA+ is a little fabricated as it stands; it’s true the Stirling GT is in the GTA+ showroom this month, but the Landstalker XL is at Simeon’s, and the Progen GP1/Bravado Verlierer are on the LSCM Test Track, so while it can be easy to assume the worst, there’s lots at play here and paywalling may not actually be what’s in the pipeline for the removed inventory. At the end of the day, it’s understandable players are going to object to losing access to content, but there’s a chance disruption can be minimized once Rockstar works to digest the community response by gathering feedback and continuing to experiment.

A tease of upcoming content!

Summer will bring even more new vehicles including the Bravado Buffalo EVX, as well as the return of Grand Theft Auto staple activities such as Armored Van Robberies, and a “large-scale battle” across the isle of Cayo Perico is on the horizon…

You may already be mega-rich and own every business in town, but mixing with other paying elites is a sign you’ve really made it, don’t ya know?

Rockstar is introducing The Vinewood Club, an exclusive members-only association. The Vinewood Club is exclusive to GTA+ subscribers, which in turn is presently exclusive to players on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The new club will seemingly act as a host for Rockstar to deliver special monthly in-game rewards in a bit more of an interactive and lore-friendly way.

The first perk is an access-all-areas pass to The Vinewood Car Club, a showroom near the docks with a collection of vehicles that fervently places style over comfort. It’ll allow players to test drive a rotating set of vehicles, use them at will in freemode, and purchase for your own garages with a 20% discount. The monthly free vehicle can also be viewed and claimed on the showroom floor.

In a similar fashion to the Los Santos Car Meet, the new hot spot is a public space in-game, meaning everyone is allowed inside; only TVC/GTA+ members are allowed to take advantage of the goods, however.

The Vinewood Club launches with the San Andreas Mercenaries update on Tuesday, 13th June

A trailer reveals the highlights, with the community already spotting hints of new clothing and vehicles to come, including what appears to be a Ferrari Roma inspired entry to the Grotti range!

A host of Quality of Life (QoL) updates are heading to GTA Online next week alongside the San Andreas Mercenaries update, with additional details revealed today on the Rockstar Newsire!

Fine-tuning the GTA Online experience has been a high priority for Rockstar over recent months; with some in-game options presently the same as they were years ago, a bit of tweaking is a win-win for us all, making things more approachable to new citizens of San Andreas and much less time-consuming for the daily veteran player.

The list is pretty lengthy and you can check it out in full on the Newswire, but for now let’s look at some important highlights.

Arriving 13th June

Register as a Boss – SecuroServ and Motorcycle Club join forces with a new option that encompasses both, making in-game access to businesses much easier This has been confirmed to be more of a streamlined menu change, rather than an entire merger of both functions! Thanks to Rockstar for the clarity

Martin Madrazo Dispatch contact missions – now solo-friendly

Name your Acid – get a 5% additional sell bonus for getting creative

Body Armor improvements – the option to Buy All (hallelujah) with lost armor also replenished after mission quick restarts

Sprinting – now thumb-friendly with an alternative hold to sprint option in settings

Rewards buffs – collectibles and events, Gerald’s Last Play, and A Superyacht Life will see payouts increased

Griefer nerfs – Orbital Cannon abuse has been targeted, with no instant resets or refunds to prevent spam. Hydra and Lazer fighter jets will also be rebalanced during freemode use

Career Progress tracker – exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, a new feature to monitor your criminal efforts

New Taxi Work vehicles – equip the Taxi Livery on your Eudora (unlock by completing 10 stunt jumps) or Broadway (unlock by completing 50 taxi jobs) to collect your fares in style

Vehicle catalogue shake-up – vehicles that are perhaps a little older or not purchased very often these days are being removed from in-game dealerships to make navigation easier, with promise that they will return via showroom rotations and the Lucky Wheel (We’ve reached out to Rockstar to see if they are able to confirm what vehicles are leaving the game, but it may not be possible to share this in time for the update – stay tuned!)

Rockstar Creator updates – “dozens” of new props, snowy weather, prop limit on PC will now match new-gen consoles (300), and misc. fixes and adjustments, with a tease of brand new Halloween props arriving in time for spooky month

and more

Speaking of spooky month, the Newswire features a very intriguing screenshot – shown below. The building on the left is LSPD (Thanks Spider-Vice) but half of the structure is missing, there’s a bunch of gravestones outside with some funky neon bats, there’s what appears to be an unidentified bridge in the background, AND it’s snowing? Are they just demonstrating new props for the Creator, or is this a little sneak peek at a future Halloween event? There’s certainly something mysterious cooking…

There’s also chance that additional changes are yet to be revealed before/on update day, with full patch notes due later on Tuesday, so keep an eye on GTANet and GTAForums for full details.
