Welcome to Snap Saturday, GTANet’s ode to the virtual photography community who continue to capture some amazingly creative shots across GTA and Red Dead.

John Marston – a man that went from mindless gunslinger, to a honest man who was trying to make up for mistakes and absence, to give Jack and Abigail the life they deserved despite adversity.
After Arthur Morgan’s death (but not before a period of turmoil where perhaps his old ways were taking over again), he moved on to have a proper family house in Beecher’s Hope in an attempt to finally live a normal life, but this didn’t stop the Bureau of Investigation agents from finding and kidnapping him; in search of information on former associates, including Dutch van der Linde, who ended up finding out that perhaps gravity is stronger than hubris.

Fourteen years ago, Red Dead Redemption released, a game that to this day is considered one of Rockstar’s best designed and best written, following John Marston’s life post the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 (well, technically).

A re-release on modern PlayStation consoles and the Nintendo Switch, alongside a rumoured potentially upcoming PC port, have reactivated many of the community’s screenshot buttons and this week, we celebrate 14 years of Red Dead Redemption all via your lenses, in a game that has stood the test of time in many ways.

Enjoy! 🤠

Over the past week, thanks to Rockstar Games, we’ve been hands-on with the Red Dead Redemption PlayStation 4 conversion developed by UK studio Double Eleven. Here’s some highlights from our experience playing on PS5!

To be brief in this introduction; it is exactly what it says on the tin – a port of the RDR everyone knows and loves from 2010, but now accessible on your PS4/5, and handheld for the first time on Switch. The game arrives packaged with the Undead Nightmare story DLC and previous pre-order/Game Of The Year (GOTY) content, but without multiplayer.

What follows isn’t a review per se, and more of an informative preview based on our hands-on, because then we’d just be reviewing RDR and everyone already knows about it! That said however, despite this not being a full remaster or remake, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t some interesting things to highlight here and there.

N.B. we haven’t played on Switch, so there’s no info about that here and we’ll leave handheld conclusions to those with access!

Before we start, let’s detail the specs of those who have previewed the game – Kirsty is on PS5, but using an older 1080p TV which means her game is being upscaled. uNi is also on PS5, but he has a native 4K monitor (or 3!) hence, visuals will be slightly different for each of them.

Now, here’s our preview and analysis of the new release. It goes without saying that we were playing a pre-release build, so additional fixes or changes may yet arrive in the form of day 1 patching.

Table of Contents

The menus look largely the same, but a few extra options have been added to some of them. From accessibility to anti-aliasing options for those not on 4K televisions/monitors, they help bring the game a bit of a step forward versus the original in terms of customisability.

The first thing that should be highlighted is one of the first things you see when you boot up the game, and a first for a Rockstar game. An easily readable, dedicated epilepsy warning before the game starts. Something that used to be shoved into game manuals or fineprints for the longest time – one of quite a few accessibility steps forward that will be talked about in this preview.

Starting out with the Display section, there is now the ability to select between AMD FSR2 and FXAA as anti-aliasing choices regardless of your TV type. This is normally something you would only see on PC, but it seems to be exposed on console.
As observed in Kirsty’s tests on an older TV, the game will upscale from your TV resolution, to 4K using the preferred upscaling/anti-aliasing method. Screenshots taken on those older or lower-resolution TV’s will still come out in 4K resolution, but upscaled, so blurrier.
If you’re on a 4K TV/monitor however, the game will be output at a native 4K and look as sharp as it should, including in screenshots. More on visuals later.

Still in the Display menu, some display accessibility options have been added, such as a motion blur toggle, subtitle scaling, objective scaling and help text scaling. Click to expand each image.

On the controls/config side, the invert camera option is now split between the Y and X axis, you can turn south paw on or off, and even flip R1/R2, and L1/L2.

All the other menus are pretty much what you already know from RDR. Difference being cheats are all unlocked from the get-go should you choose to use them, and, of course, the omission of the Multiplayer menus as it doesn’t exist in this port.

There is also no Social Club menu or integration yet, but there are trophies to unlock via PSN, so we don’t know whether this is a pre-release limitation or if the game won’t have a connection to Social Club so you can see your achievements.
The Trilogy Definitive Editions automatically connected to your Social Club account via PSN, so it might be the same deal here, and you may be able to look at your trophies on the Social Club website regardless.

Gameplay and Visuals

Gameplay is the same good old RDR. There are basically no changes here, as this is a port to more recent platforms and not really a remaster that could change the gameplay in any way, shape, or form. Be the same outlaw you were in 2010, but at higher resolution.

Speaking of resolution – as mentioned earlier, if you’re playing on a 4K TV you’ll get Red Dead Redemption as crisp as it can get, at a native 4K. If you’re on an older TV however, the presentation may be slightly softer, but this is something you may only notice in screenshots or larger but lower resolution TV’s. On those TV’s, screenshots are taken at 4K resolution, but upscaled from 1080p (an example is below) – at least in this build, you can tweak this upscaling by choosing FXAA or AMD FSR 2.

Oddly, those options are also available on 4K TV’s, but they are simply different anti-aliasing choices, there doesn’t seem to be any upscaling going on as both are equally sharp and what seems to be on par with Xbox BC’s native presentation – we’ll leave any applicable pixel counting to the folks at DigitalFoundry. Odd option for a console game, but for those who like FSR’s presentation, they can choose to use it.

You can check out more images below the following two and see for yourself, taken in native 4K – click each to expand to full resolution.

As for the controls, as expected, no major changes to report here, other than the obvious generational difference of the controller in your hands! All controls remain the same across foot and horseback, with the PS4/5 touchpad becoming the “open satchel” function. There is no haptic feedback or any of the PS5-specific features, as this is a PS4 app.

Bugs

As mentioned before, the build tested is a pre-release build, so there may or may not be a day 1 patch available to fix any issues. Because ports to different platforms aren’t straight-forward and can sometimes cause more issues, there can always be a few kinks.
We haven’t experienced anything major: no crashing, and no falling through the map, or any other similar issues. In this hands-on, we’ve observed:

  • Minor physics glitching such as stationary horses’ front legs moving/flickering.
  • Doors opening before you reach them while sprinting.
  • “loot” function doesn’t consistently show over the entire zombie body in UN – have to manoeuvre multiple times to get it to appear.

We aren’t entirely sure if those or some of those were already in the original game, it’s been a while, so we can’t quite comment on that.

During the week, a 1.02 patch was released for the game, and the build we were initially playing when we received the code was already 1.01, so it’s possible some extra things were fixed that weren’t noticed.

Bugfixes

The original RDR release from 2010 was updated over the years with maintenance patches, but some of these patches introduced bugs and glitches that people have been clamouring to get fixed for the longest time. In 2014, the patch that disabled GameSpy support apparently introduced a couple of major bugs that affected especially the Undead Nightmare experience. In this release, as far as we could see, it seems like some of those are fixed.

For instance, toggling the Golden Guns status now functions properly and adds/removes the gold skin from Cattleman Revolver, and all other weapons, as it should.
On the Undead Nightmare side, one of the biggest issues reported by the community since that 2014 patch seems to have been fixed – zombies are no longer headless and you can kill them properly.

There might be more things, but it was slightly difficult to get a comprehensive list of broken things with RDR more than 10 years after the original release, other than some issues introduced in the GameSpy patch.

Conclusions

In a nutshell, Red Dead Redemption on PS4/5 offers a solid 30 FPS performance with some notable bugs from the past now fixed, plus up to 4K resolution if your screen is capable. There’s also some new accessibility options and language support.

Most notable absences, in no particular order, are no 60 FPS support, no photo mode, and no multiplayer.

All in all, this conversion delivers a stable and unproblematic experience compared to 7th generation consoles. It also benefits from the additional technical smoothing and bugfixes compared to the Xbox BC version. The lack of PC attention, and all the bells and whistles of a full remaster or remake, will be regarded as a missed opportunity by the community, but this doesn’t take the experience away from PlayStation and Switch owners with an interest in re-visiting (or playing for the first time) the conclusion of John Marston’s critically acclaimed story and beloved DLC on today’s consoles.

Following on from a kerfuffle of rumors over the past several weeks, Rockstar Games have laid speculations to rest and revealed Red Dead Redemption will arrive on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles digitally on August 17 and physically on October 13.

The port, described as a new conversion, will bring the 2010 masterpiece to the two consoles with PlayStation 5 owners also guaranteed access via PS4 backwards compatibility. The flesh-eating side-story Undead Nightmare hasn’t been forgotten, of course, and arrives packaged together with the main game.

The conversion has been developed by Double Eleven Studios, a team based in the north of England that was founded by former Rockstar Leeds employees in 2009. D11 is most known for developing ports of games such as Goat Simulator, Rust, and Minecraft Dungeons, as well as leading content for Fallout 76. The studio has acknowledged the release is “not quite a remaster, not quite a port”, but that a lot of love has been put into development to bring these games to new consoles for the first time.

Following launch, this will bring Red Dead Redemption in line for all console players, as Xbox Series X/S already has access to a 4K capable version via the Xbox Backwards Compatibility program – this obviously explains why Xbox is not part of the release announcement, in case you were wondering! This means PS4 Pro and PS5 will likely play up to 4K resolution much like Xbox BC, with the PS4 original and Switch versions at 1080p. FPS is not yet confirmed, but Xbox BC runs at 30FPS, meaning it’s likely the same for this new conversion as well.

Unfortunately, PC continues to be excluded from the line-up, rallying bitter disappointment amongst fans. The game has long evaded the platform, and it was thought with the recent rumors that it may at last arrive on PC, but alas, it was not meant to be and it’s not particularly clear why. Unconfirmed but regularly discussed, the game is thought to have experienced complicated development back in the day, and the different architecture of the 7th generation era of consoles is speculated to contribute to the lack of PC attention from the get-go. Some fans still hold hope for a native version to be announced in the future however, while others resort to emulation to fulfil the experience.

Both PlayStation and Switch players can expect to pay $49.99, digital or physical, which has been a bone of contention amongst the community since the reveal. The PlayStation store also confirms that the game is singleplayer-only, omitting the original multiplayer component that Xbox players have luckily kept access to – an additional sore point for some.

Regardless of your feelings on the above matters, PlayStation players have longed for access to this game on their present day consoles for quite some time, proving this release is still be a win for the veteran community and new players alike. Similarly, a game of such legendary status like this appearing on Switch can only mean good things for Nintendo’s catalogue and the play-on-the-go experience.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed trending across social media today, there’s talk of a Red Dead Redemption remaster or remake being in the works. The source? A curious new entry by South Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee.

The database reveals that title “Red Dead Redemption” was rated on 15th June 2023 – the entry is separate to all other Red Dead entries such as the original RDR, plus RDR2, leading cowpokes to board the hype train straight to Blackwater.

Now for context, this isn’t really a “leak”, South Korea’s GRAC is an official ratings board, much like ESRB in the US and PEGI in the EU; it has a reputation across gaming media for being pretty speedy with new ratings, leading to games being been spotted first on the database before they were even announced – an appearance usually indicates an announcement or release is due “soon” according to Kotaku. Most notably, a similar event happened with the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition release back in September 2021, in which a GRAC entry confirmed the existence of the project before a public announcement a month later.

The facts

  • GRAC ratings have previously confirmed other games existence before public announcements
  • This entry is separate from all other Red Dead related releases, including old bundles such as GOTY Edition
  • Classification code includes “NV”, which apparently indicates a console release as PC is usually listed separately with “NP” (according to Gematsu)
  • The classification includes the term “body damage”, which is new for this title and only appears in RDR2’s rating (according to Reddit)
  • The classification includes a reference to “dead bodies being infected with zombie viruses”, indicating the inclusion of RDR’s DLC Undead Nightmare

So what could it mean? Well above the rest, it’s speculation for the time being. Fans have been gagging on their oatcakes for a modern and accessible way to play this masterpiece for a long time, especially after re-connecting with John and the gang in RDR2. There’s been rumours of a remaster churning in the past, but it has been all quiet on the western front in that regard. So here we are now, and what better way to celebrate just how special this game still is, 13 years on, than a souped up remaster or a full blown remake using RDR2 assets? We’re all giddy at the thought.

The game was removed from Playstation Now, the Sony Cloud service, back at the end of 2022, so presently the only way to play the game is via Xbox backwards compatibility or by dusting off your OG PS3.

Realistically speaking of course, it may not be a remaster or a remake at all, so make sure you fully take that into consideration! There’s opposing opinions that it could be a Switch port given Rockstar’s relationship with Nintendo over recent years. There’s also voices suggesting it could be just a port to last and current gen consoles (without improvements) to increase exposure, though I use the word “just” lightly as this would still be a huge win for the community at large. There’s also other questions coming in all directions, such as; Why is there no platform listed like the other Red Dead titles? Why does the title not include an indicator of a re-release such as “Definitive Edition” or “Remastered”? What about a PC version of RDR? What about RDR2 4K60FPS?

The verdict

Beyond our wants and desires, nothing can be answered factually right now, so lets keep our noses clean. Essentially, this new GRAC rating is legitimate, but it simply seems to indicate that something appears to be happening in the Rockstar kitchen, but until official corroboration, we’re left to chew the fat until the cows come home and we may already be in over our heads with expectation. As always, keep your vibes positive and your thoughts in check, as you never know what’s around the corner. Our hearts are absolutely ready for anything more to come from this legendary series. Join us in our dedicated Red Dead section of GTAForums until then!

Welcome to Snap Saturday, GTANet’s ode to the virtual photography community who continue to capture some amazingly creative shots across GTA and Red Dead.

Last time we did a Red Dead Snap Saturday, we highlighted our favourite boah, the main hero of the Red Dead Redemption 2 story – Arthur Morgan. Succumbing to the most unexpected ailment at the tail-end of the Wild West era, thinking he had much more to worry about in his future, one person, a previous Red Dead hero, was always by his side – John Marston, played by the also-legendary Rob Wiethoff.

A friend, family man in the making, and mediator of the gang, closing the deal by killing the traitors in both Red Dead 2 and the first game, you could say that he really is the deuteragonist in the prequel. The support beam Arthur always needed, and also someone who went on to have a tragic end in the first game.

This week, we look at John Marston and the family, through the community’s lens. Enjoy.

Eleven years ago, many of us were riding to Mexico listening to the soothing voice of José González’ “Far Away”, in expectation to see what was happening in John Marston’s story, and in one of gaming’s most defining moments.

The band Ashtar Command also performed another one of the game’s most iconic pieces – Deadman’s Gun, which you can listen to here.

This was Rockstar’s first proper Western masterpiece after having played around with the genre in Red Dead Revolver, and it was received with massive critical acclaim back in 2010, and very well deservedly so, as it is, to us, one of the best games in history.

Rockstar went on to one-up themselves with the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, a prequel to this first game.

From the attractive multiplayer modes, to the purely emotional story and engaging gameplay, an unrivalled experience back then on the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles – an extremely happy birthday to the first Red Dead Redemption.

You can also check out an emotional live performance of José González performing “Far Away” at the Rockstar New York studio’s roof back in the Summer of 2010, below:

20 years ago in April 2001, our website owner Tank (who is still very much with us, by the way!) started out a website and a forum straight out of his love for the GTA series and how a fully 3D game was finally coming out. Having owned a site for the 2D era games and for the anticipation of a 3D GTA before (now gone unfortunately), it was time to make something bigger. Not only a forum, but also a fansite to speculate about what GTA3 had to offer, the modding possibilities, everything! The very very first version is so broken up because of Internet archive fairy dust, that we’ll leave you with merely a link: GrandTheftAuto3.net

Welcome to GrandTheftAuto3.net

Although we haven’t officially launched yet, Today is our opening day
GrandTheftAuto3.net is here to provide everyone with a premiere resource for news, information, downloads, and tons more for the game.
Anyway, I’m Tank and I’m the lead webmaster at GrandTheftAuto3.net.

[Posted by: Tank] [At: Friday, April 6, 2001]

This means that today GTANet/GTAForums is a whole 20 years old! Not quite old enough to drink in some states of the US, but we’re 20! A whole two decades. Whee!

At one point on our 11th anniversary, fellow staff member AndyGanteks made a great topic about what has happened in GTAForums/GTANet since its inception. From great database crashes in 2001 that made us lose the little we still had, to the site being reopened on a fresh slate (working on that same slate since then!), to new sites within the network opening up with news, screenshots and all kinds of goodies about each game, and more. Obviously, this all including typical community drama and gossip, even before social media like Twitter was a thing!

Real life has put a bit of a toll on all of us over the years (especially in the past year for obvious reasons), and we haven’t been able to neatly document as much as we wish we could have in the same way.
We obviously have participated since always, but we’re sure more seasoned members will remember the glorious moments of GTA V’s pre-release, the thread simulators made by ThirstyHyena (a couple of us like Spider-Vice and Kirsty are spotlit there too!), trying (and successfully!) to make a map of GTA V just based off of trailers, custom groups made for believers (Beliebers, even, who had to wear Justin Bieber avatars!) and non-believers about Rockstar giving us info in time (god damned Unsaveables, praise be Kifflom!), the madness of Red Dead Redemption 2’s pre-release period with trying to analyse trailers to understand the allegedly leaked map and looking for CV’s from voice actors that could reference the game, good good old hype times and so many more memories that it’s impossible to list them all here. And we’re obviously expecting plenty more of that whenever the next Rockstar project comes along! 😉

During this time, we have been recognised as an official fansite, appeared in game manuals (pics by uNi, look at us as gtavice.com, gtanet.com and gta3.com!), gotten plenty of sweet goodies and attention from the lovely people at Rockstar, we’ve attended multiple fansite events for games like GTA IV, RDR, L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 with other fansite friends, attended community gameplay sessions, and much much more. Our GTA4.net Street View has been featured on the Newswire, and so was uNi’s massive massive Rockstar goodies collection, for instance. It’s been a very very wild and enjoyable ride this whole time. But we’ll be leaving all the emotions to the end. As for the rest of this article…

If you need a bit of a nostalgia trip, here’s how GTAForums.com looked back in the day, enjoy! Perhaps you will remember some of them if you were a member back then, perhaps you’ll be impressed at how basic it all was, in the days where a lot of us still had dial-up internet and screenshot topics with titles yelling “56K WARNING!!!”. Some of them have missing images, again, Internet Archive fairy dust… But if you look back to some of our (still intact!) legacy sites like our GTA3 site, you might be able to imagine how some of them looked! Click to make bigger.

Increasing traffic demands with all the GTA IV and GTA V hype (where we broke our concurrent online users record at about 15K, with hundreds of posts per second), and security concerns over the years, led us to start changing our styling a little bit as we upgraded the version of the underlying software that powers the forums, that was becoming full of cobwebs and magic code hacking dust that could explode any moment. This led us to our current look, and to some of our exciting new announcements for the celebration:

ALL NEW GTAFORUMS THEMES!

Back in the day, GTAForums had a wide selection of themes maintained by different staff members (some even downloaded from theme sites back in the day when that was a thing…), that looked from pleasing to the eyes, to absolutely retina-burning. Real life demands along with forum updates over time meant that we preferred to stick to the tried and tested GTAForums classic colours, but, this is about to change with a couple of brand-new themes we have to announce, with a chance of more to come in the future…

GTAForums Nightshift – This should be self-explanatory. We’ve reached the modern age of the Internet and turned off the lights. You’ll be missing out on the colours that GTAForums has brought to your CRT, LCD and now even OLED monitors over the years, but if your jam is the darkness (or the occult, or a spoopy version of GTAForums…) you can now switch to GTAForums Nightshift and feel at home! Perhaps we’ll even add some pentagrams, Weegie Ouija boards… okay maybe not.

ScotForums – Speaking of that horrible pun (apologies to all Glaswegians) that probably didn’t even work… The popularity of this Irn Bru flavoured theme could’ve fooled us, so we’ve brought this special guest back in all its Scottish glory, and with a few new additions! It looks like a lot of our members loved the wee cone as a forum Reaction, so we just made the GTANet logo suffer with one atop its heid. Do remember this was originally an April Fools theme so don’t expect it to be maintained too much in terms of your suggestions, etc! If that’s your jam and you want to rock the colours of Scotland and the colours of the nation’s favourite drink, you can now do it!
Editor’s note by Spider-Vice: I was absolutely flabbergasted at how popular this Scottish-themed abomination I made in a few hours was, just out of inspiration of a few things, such as Rockstar North & Dundee being in Scotland, uNi now living there, among other things. I’m very glad we’re gonna keep it! 😂😂

FEEDBACK TOPIC

BANNER CONTESTS!

We’ve always been nostalgic folk, and most of our themes, including the myriad of themes we had back in the days of GTAForums v1, had very nostalgic old-school banners, some related to the games they were about (we had a GTA LCS theme, an Afterfuture GTA2 theme…). But things are changing, we now have so much more to see in Grand Theft Auto, we have a Red Dead section, and well, it’s all very overwhelming since the last time we’ve updated our banner. We feel like we’re getting old here…!

Let’s go for a change! We want YOU to design us a proper banner for each of the theme versions we have announced, that is, the main theme we’ve always used, the GTAForums Nightshift Theme and the ScotForums Theme! Obviously we want both main theme and Nightshift to be the centre-pieces, and, should we add, we have no rush for a ScotForums banner specifically, but if you want to give it a shot, it doesn’t necessarily have to be images of the games, just make it as Scotland themed as you can! Could be icons, could be Scottish easter eggs from Rockstar’s games… Let’s give it the look it deserves!

The requirements are simple – dimensions should be about 1920×200 (height can vary a little, but not too much because we don’t want to have too wide of a gap between the banner that says GTAFORUMS and the actual forums), or 3840×200 if you want/are able to fit more images/icons/what have you on the width axis for those with larger/ultrawide monitors. Action should be centred at the top of the banner so nothing is cut-off by the fade-out into the forums at the bottom! As you may imagine, the banner for Nightshift probably should focus on darker scenes. You may try using black and white, or a nice nightly scene in a GTA game or even a little bit of Red Dead, logos, patterns, it’s all up to you, go wild!

MOAR SLOGANS!

Slogans have been a part of our forums since we’ve revamped them and updated them to a fresh new version a few years ago. For the longest time we’ve had only a few, cycling every so often. Now, we have a much bigger selection, from GTA and RDR game quotes, to GTAForums jokes, to inside jokes, easter eggs and many other things! But we want MOAR! We once again enlist YOU to give us ideas for the slogans that appear in the banner at the top of the forums, they could be related to GTAForums in-jokes, to Rockstar community jokes and easter eggs, to anything you think is funny that comes to mind.

Just a few rules that should be very obvious to most and we expect you to cooperate with us on this, pretty please:

  • Avoid swearing. We censor part of it on the forums due to ads and page ranking, and we can censor swearing on the slogan, but perhaps be a bit more creative than just using swear words in a slogan;
  • No insults, that is to other forum members, to the community at large, or to Rockstar Games/Take-Two. Be civil and creative, don’t use these slogans to let out your personal hate of a feature, game or company. Making jokes about stuff like Oppressors and using other harmless GTA Online memes is fine, as we do already have a “flying brooms” slogan for example, but don’t make it about “griefing” and similar toxic subjects either, we want fun, not picking fights with these;
  • Please don’t make them too long due to mobile users, the maximum size for a slogan would be something like the “All we had to do, was follow the damn train!” slogan we already have, that already looks pretty wide on a regular 16:9 phone screen in portrait mode;
  • The slogans cycle through a list every 20 minutes, don’t be surprised if you don’t see one of your selected slogans straight away on the forums, you may just be missing it.

THE GTAFORUMS CENSUS – COMING SOON!

There can’t be a GTANet celebration, whether it be the awards or anything else, without our census master Slohbur’s numbers about the community. We will be posting some interesting stats from over the years (although not as many as we would like due to software limitations and data format differences over the years), all very nicely formatted and modern, so you can gasp at how much time you’ve wasted speculating about the next Rockstar project and talking about GTA Online and Red Dead Online on GTAForums. Seriously, time here goes by at a completely different pace!

We don’t have an ETA for you yet, but we will be doing these things within the next few days along with the slogan and banner contests.

MEDALS!

Calling all karmawhores… By popular request over the years due to hamster shenanigans and Invision being a bit of a pain, Spider-Vice has been busy under the hood with every single one of his 8 legs, and after some tweakage and tunage, we can reveal that Medals on GTAForums are back! You’ll find the familiar flashy icon under the avatar area; just hover over it to check out your awards list.

Don’t have a medal? Never fear, there’ll be chance to prove your forum worth in our Annual Awards, which will be back after hiatus later in 2021!

FINAL WORDS – THANK YOU!!!

Now… we all absolutely suck at being sentimental, but…

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who has stayed with us and supported/supports us and still chooses us to discuss Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead and Rockstar at large. I don’t think any of us imagined we’d be here after 20 years, and it’s just wild to know that Tank’s little creation due to being a fan of the top-down GTA’s became one of the main hubs for Rockstar discussion and much more.

Thank you to our members and staff, both old and new (including the banned ones and troublemakers!) for staying and for creating discussion, and thanks Rockstar (and many of their lovely employees that have positively influenced us, and that we wish we could thank personally for many reasons) for the support, recognising us and even including us in the good old manuals of the old times of gaming, for sending us goodies for being a recognised fansite and much more!

Thanks everyone for all of the memories, good, bittersweet and even bad that everyone has given us in the past 20 years, as we continue hoping to be here for 20 more! Let there be more game pre-release madness and all the things that make us such a dynamic community!

An also very obvious thanks to all the other fansites and the R* community, especially the OG fansites who have supported us over the years, sometimes by sharing news in the good old days of running news sites like these before social media to get the word out there, among other many things and good times at official Rockstar fansite events like the ones mentioned above.

We are also sure that many of our longer-standing members will remind us of even more moments we may have gone through together that are just too many to list in a news article or forum post; please share your memories with us as a we revel in our own nostalgia.

From the GTANet/GTAForums/RedDeadNet Team, we wish we could have a gigantic list of names BUT,
WE LOVE YOU ALL AND THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN!
💘🥰

According to reports from the Italian press and other news sites, Ennio Morricone, the person responsible for scoring over 400 films and TV shows, including most westerns such as The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, has died today aged 91, after a fall that proved to be fatal.

He had most recently worked with Quentin Tarantino in the Hateful Eight, and was one of the biggest inspirations for the soundtracks of videogames like Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 and even Red Dead Revolver.

We were treated to another interview yesterday in celebration of Red Dead Redemption’s 10 year anniversary, this time courtesy of IGN. They sat down with Rob Nelson and Josh Bass (studio heads of Rockstar North and Rockstar San Diego respectively) as well as designers Ghyan Koehne and Silas Morse.

Highlights include talking about the challenges they faced when creating a Red Dead game after the fast-paced world of GTA, their favourite moments of game design, and appreciating how much of an impact a western themed game had on the world.

“What surprised me was how Red Dead Redemption brought people into our medium who would otherwise never have given it a thought. We heard stories of consoles and games bought by people in their late 50s and 60s, not as gifts for their grandchildren but for themselves. For the generations of men and women who grew up watching western films and shows on television, Red Dead Redemption gave them an opportunity to live out those experiences. That sums up what makes RDR so special to me and what validated that the emotional connection was shared by others and far beyond our expectations.”

Josh Bass

It’s always neat hearing from the developers involved in such a masterpiece; after all they are at the heart of its’ creation.

Gaming industry editorial website GameZone have today published an interview with the one and only Rob Wiethoff, voice actor and motion capture of John Marston. The lucky editor had a 40 minute call with the frontiersman in celebration of Red Dead Redemption’s 10 year anniversary the other day.

In the interview, Rob Wiethoff talks about how different he is from the man he gave his voice to, how he went into the series without knowing it was a videogame, and the emotions he felt during *that* ending all those years ago.

“One thing that stuck out to me was a lot of people were getting, you know, 10, 15, 20 pages and I got a, I got a book. *laughs* I don’t know how many pages I got, but I thought, ‘Oh, wow. Wow, alright.’ And so, our director came over and he said, ‘Yeah, you’re the playable character.’ And I said, ‘Awesome, that’s great.’ I had no idea what he was talking about.”

Rob Wiethoff

He sounds like a lovely fella!
